A Celebration of Salmon Rivers
WELCOME
NASF’s exciting new photography book, A Celebration of Salmon Rivers, will be sent to the printer soon and is expected to be completed by 1 September, 2007. We would like to have some idea of the demand for the book in advance so we can determine the number of copies to print. Obviously the more copies we sell, the more NASF can raise from this project to achieve its goal of restoring the abundance of Atlantic salmon. It will be a beautiful book. Everyone who admires Salmo salar and the marvelous rivers it inhabits will enjoy it and want a copy. A detailed description of the book and instructions for ordering it are on the following page.
The book will sell for £35 in the UK, 4500 ISK in Iceland, €50 in Europe and $59.95 in the US. We are hopeful corporations and other organizations will purchase multiple copies as gifts for clients and friends. Organization who purchase 50 or more copies can have their name and logo printed on the cover for a slight additional charge (i.e., €2950 for 50 and €5450 for 100 copies). The book will make a splendid gift for the holidays and recipients will know that part of what you paid will go to a very worthwhile cause.
Special “Bibliophile” Edition
Because this will be such a significant book in the world of the Atlantic salmon (covering more Atlantic salmon rivers than any book before and containing a Foreword by HRH the Prince of Wales, wonderful photos of rivers rarely photographed and articles by an elite group of sportsmen), NASF is offering a very special edition of the book with a bonded leather spine, cloth sides to match and cloth slip case. It will include a special edition page in parchment which will be numbered and signed by Orri Vigfusson and the principle photographer, R. Randolph Ashton - a true collector’s item. This special edition will be sold for £200, €250, 25,000 ISK and $350 and all profits from the sale will go to NASF. Purchasing the special edition is a great way to support NASF (and add a beautiful book to your library!)
Thank you!

A Celebration of Salmon Rivers
A STORY OF A PROMISE The North Atlantic Salmon Fund was founded in 1989 by Orri Vigfússon when it became clear to him that wild salmon from rivers on both sides of the Atlantic were in dangerous decline. He realized that unless a way could be found of protecting the fish during their oceanic migrations, the species could not withstand the onslaught of the modern commercial fishing methods ranged against it. His answer was to mobilize international support and persuade commercial fishermen to give up fishing for salmon, either permanently or for a period long enough to allow stocks to recover. Since then his organization, which now has branches in all the North Atlantic countries and a worldwide list of supporters, has raised nearly $30 million to buy out netting rights in order to reduce excessive commercial exploitation. Conservationists believe this is now having a major and positive impact on restoring runs of wilds salmon to the rivers of Europe, Iceland and North America. NASF has introduced a new vision of abundant wild salmon stocks so that future generations will know and appreciate the beauty and strength of the wild Atlantic salmon. It believes that the fruits of this recovery should be enjoyed by every nation whose rivers or seas produce, feed or form migratory routes for continue to benefit from our activities are beautifully depicted in this book. NASF’s profits from the sale of this book will be dedicated to its continuing efforts to protect Salmo Salar. SALMON RIVERS“A Celebration of Salmon Rivers” is devoted to the Atlantic salmon, Salmo Salar, and the magnificent rivers they inhabit. The book depicts more than fifty of the finest Atlantic salmon rivers. Each river is described by persons familiar with the river and the concerns for maintaining and preserving it. “The mission of the North Atlantic Salmon Fund is to preserve the Atlantic Salmon and restore salmon stocks to abundance in the salmon rivers of the world. This book gives a sense of what it might feel like to be on a particular river experiencing its unique and fascinating qualities. Some are big and bold; others small and intimate. Some are located in remote wilderness, while others flow through farmland and towns and even beside highways. But all these rivers, and mankind, will be enriched when salmon once again thrive in them as once they did. This is still a dream, but one I hope will be shared by you once you have encountered these great salmon rivers through the pages of this book..”Paul Volcker “My country Denmark, like many others in continental Europe, has many salmon anglers and a strong cultural attachment to the salmon developed when salmon still ran wild and plentiful in our rivers. This beautiful book gives us a vision of what our rivers could be like once again. A vision those of us who support the efforts of NASF strive for. We all wish our rivers would once again connect us to this magnificent fish, such a meaningful part of our heritage.”Uffe Ellemann-Jensen Most of the photographs appearing in this book and the cover photograph were taken by R.Randolph Ashton. With access to the rivers, guiding services and accommodations provided by friends and supporters of NASF, he spent the summers of 2005 and2006 travelling by airplane, helicopter, train, bus, automobile, boat and foot throughout the entire range of the Atlantic salmon. R.Randolph Ashton, born 1978,lives in Ketchum, Idaho.
NASF is producing this wonderful book with three objectives in mind –
(1) to engender love and respect for our great Atlantic salmon rivers and the need to conserve them, (2) to give NASF and its mission additional exposure, and (3) to raise a little money. It will be “coffee table” size of 240 pages with over 250 beautiful photographs. There is an inspiring Foreword by HRH the Prince of Wales, a Dedication to former NASF(US) Board Member Jack Hemingway and an Intoduction by NASF Founder and Chairman Orri Vigfusson. The book will depict over fifty of the world’s finest salmon rivers through spectacular photographs and short descriptions by people who know these rivers well:
Scotland Russia Iceland
